An Easter Devotional by Pastor Scott Davis
Jesus was joyfully committed to the work that was accomplished at the resurrection. A simple thought for you today is this: follow Jesus’ example by staying joyfully committed to God’s task. Hebrews chapter 12 makes a profound statement about Jesus and his motivation for dying for the sin of humanity. He did it “For the joy that was set before Him.” Hebrews 12:2 (ESV) “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Jesus is the source of blessing for believers. He is the pathway for the faith. It was a difficult path that involved denial and suffering. Why did He do it? Jesus was passionate about accomplishing His work on earth. He stayed committed to the mission that God gave Him. He is the supreme example of what faithfulness looks like. Look to Jesus and follow his pattern of faithfulness.
The motivation for HIs commitment was joy. The joy of being pleasing to God, the joy of providing salvation for humanity, and the joy of completing His task and being seated at the right hand of the throne of God. For all of that, Jesus endured the cross. He willingly gave Himself to be tortured and killed. He also despised the shame and humiliation of a public death and of being mistreated by His own creation, and of suffering the wrath of God. Now He is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. He completed His task.
He did all of that for the joy that was set before Him. Follow Jesus’ example and stay joyfully committed to God.
