Luke 10:25-37 (ESV)

Authentic Christians love their neighbor

I.  Question 1: a lawyer tried to test Jesus by asking him a question of salvation. V.25

II.  Answer 1 is question 2: Jesus answered by asking the lawyer what the law says.  v.26

III.  Answer 2: v.27: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

IV.  Answer to question 1: Jesus told him to keep the law and he would have eternal life.  V. 28

A.  This answer presents a known problem in Israel: the Jewish leaders failed to love their neighbors.  They had not kept the law, and this was an opportunity for Jesus to prove this to the listeners.

V.  Question 3: “who is my neighbor?” v. 29

VI.  Answer 3: The good Samaritan v. 30-35

VII. Question 4: Go and do what you have said v.36

VIII. Answer 4: The person who showed mercy was the right kind of neighbor. V.37

Truth: You cannot be saved by keeping the law because you have not.

Truth: Salvation comes through grace by faith.

Truth: You must Love God and love people.  All people are equally people.  All people were made in the image of God and have immeasurable value.

Truth: Loving your neighbor involves caring for everyone that you come across.  When there is a real need you must do what you can to help without regard to age, ethnicity, culture, beliefs, sexual orientation, or financial status.  The more urgent the need the more you need to do what you can within your means to help.
