Position Description


The church janitor is responsible for keeping the church clean and tidy between events, services, and various activities. The job description of a church janitor describes the many duties needed to keep the church always looking pristine and orderly. The church janitor works in conjunction with the church custodian. They answer to the lead pastor, church council, and is a valuable member of the church staff. 

Basic Requirements

  1. Must profess Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord
  2. Delegate and recruit help in fulfilling janitorial duties for all services and functions.
  3. Be responsible for obtaining a replacement when absent.
  4. Able to work in a team environment. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  1. Must have a cheerful and positive attitude and be willing to help in all things.
  2. Must be courteous and tactful.
  3. Must be self-directed and observant, able to complete all janitorial duties with little to no supervision.
  4. Must be flexible and willing to adapt to varying schedules and level of work required from week to week.
  5. Must be committed to the mission and goal of the church.
  6. Must have knowledge of different cleaning techniques, including stain removal, disinfecting, waxing, shampooing, vacuuming, sanitizing and more.
  7. Must be proactive, attending to messes and problems before they are brought up or requested.
  8. Must be honest and trustworthy as he or she will have access to secured areas of the church.
  9. Must be responsible and able to arrange for duties to be accomplished even when the individual cannot manage alone.
  10. Position requires agility, stability on ladders, and the ability to lift 50 pounds.
  11. Observe proper chemical handling procedures when working with cleaning agents, including wearing gloves, goggles, or masks.
  12. Interacting with church staff and visitors in a respectful, positive manner. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in pulpit set up and take down for all services, including weddings and funerals.
  2. Coordinate opening and closing of the church with the Custodian or staff for all scheduled events.
  3. Clean baptismal pool before and after use.
  4. Assist in event preparation for all scheduled church events.
  5. Taking inventory of cleaners and other supplies and submitting requests when items need replenished.
  6. Clean all areas of the building including nursery, and kitchen as needed. Empty trash and remove it to the dumpster.
  7. Restock items in bathrooms, meeting rooms, and offices, such as toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, and other supplies.
  8. Daily spot cleaning in all public areas of the building.
  9. Dust all horizontal surfaces including light fixtures & furniture, filing cabinets, window ledges & exposed surfaces of desks.
  10. Clean and sanitize drinking fountains.
  11. Clean entrance glass doors and interior glass doors
  12. Vacuum all mats and rugs in all areas.
  13. Pick up and dispose of all materials left in the pews following Sunday morning services
  14. Provide a cleaning schedule.
